Chemical Biology

Program Structure

Bachelor

The Chemical Biology program is characterized above all by its interdisciplinary nature. Chemistry and biology are the primary fields of study here. The bachelor’s program focuses primarily on the fundamental principles of the natural sciences, which are then explored in greater depth in the master’s program.

The core courses in the bachelor's program include:
– Experimental Physics
– Mathematics
– General, Organic, and Physical Chemistry
– General and Molecular Biology
– Chemical Biology and Biochemistry

The program begins by teaching the fundamentals of chemistry, mathematics, and biology; as students progress, these concepts are applied and explored in greater depth in the fields of chemical biology, biochemistry, and biophysical chemistry. In addition, the program is characterized by its many laboratory courses, in which practical skills are also taught in the natural science disciplines. You can find more detailed information on the chemical biology websites via the links listed here: “Application“as well as ”Curriculum" here.

In the module handbook, you'll find everything you need to know about module grades and exams. If you have any questions or need clarification, feel free to contact the student council at any time. We're happy to help!

Master

In the master’s program, most modules can be chosen based on student interest. After completing the advanced module in chemical biology, students can initially choose between the required-elective modules “Organic Chemistry,” “Biophysical Chemistry,” and “Biology.” All of these modules are accompanied by laboratory practicals. In the specialization module, students complete a specialization project (similar to a bachelor’s thesis) along with two related lectures. Like the bachelor’s thesis, the specialization project can be carried out in a research group in chemistry, biochemistry, or biology. Finally, in the fourth semester, students write their master’s thesis. In total, students must also earn 12 ECTS credits in key competencies.
