Before Starting Your Studies

How to Become a Student in Karlsruhe

The following steps will guide you through the process of getting into KIT:

1. Get informed!
2. Application
3. Enrollment

1. Get informed!

First and foremost, you should be sure that you’re committed to your choice of biology, chemistry, teacher education, chemical biology, or food chemistry—and to Karlsruhe as your place of study. This will help you avoid dropping out and save a lot of time and money (tuition!). Here are a few ways to learn more about your future studies:

– Attend the university’s information day for high school students, “Uni for Beginners” (Info)

– Talk to students about their experiences

– Listen to a lecture

– Read about the program and how it works (you can find this information on our website, for example)

– Stop by our student association office and get some advice.

2. Application

For Biology

To study biology in Karlsruhe, you must first apply via the Portal Online – Application NC. There, you’ll go through a registration process at the end of which you can print out a form, which you then send to the Admissions Office along with the required documents (see the next link). Even though it’s called “NC Application,” relevant professional experience or special achievements play a role in addition to your high school graduation exam scores and subject grades. The exact procedure is outlined in the respective admission regulations.

You can find more information at the following links:

Biology Department Page: Required Application Documents, List of Academic Achievements That Are or Are Not Taken Into Account, and Admission Regulations

Administration Page: Additional General Information

Note: For deadlines and dates during the lecture period, see: Dates and Deadlines

For Chemistry

Since 2012, students wishing to study chemistry in Karlsruhe have been required to participate in a selection process.

Students are currently selected by the Hochschulstart Foundation

The application deadlines listed there also apply.

As of now (2017), there is also a selection interview with the faculty's professors.

For Chemical Biology

To apply to the Chemical Biology program at KIT, you can visit the SLE website for the program (KIT – Studiengänge – Chemische Biologie Bachelor of Science), under the “Application Portal” tab, where you can start your application.

Since Chemical Biology is one of the NC programs, you must register with Hochschulstart to submit your application. If you’re applying to multiple degree programs at the same time, you can also specify your order of preference through this platform. For more information, visit the Hochschulstart website.

Next, complete your application on the KIT application portal. To do so, you’ll need to upload a scanned copy of your high school diploma or an equivalent certificate. You’ll also be asked for information about your health insurance and similar details. In addition, you must upload a certificate confirming that you have taken the self-assessment test for academic and career orientation. You can also list volunteer positions, awards, vocational training, and additional qualifications.

Even though it is called “Application NC,” relevant professional experience or special achievements play a role in addition to high school graduation exam scores and course grades. These “other achievements” are evaluated by a selection committee (Section 8 of the selection regulations). The exact procedure is outlined in the respective selection regulations.

You can find more information in the selection regulations.

Note: For deadlines and dates during the lecture period, see: Dates and Deadlines

For Food Chemistry

To study food chemistry in Karlsruhe, you must first apply via the Portal Online - Application NC - Subjects portal. There, you will go through a registration process, at the end of which you can print out a form that you then send to the Admissions Office along with the required documents. These documents must include, among other things:

– Proof of any vocational training, as well as any other special qualifications

– Certified copy of the high school diploma

Even though it is called “Application NC,” relevant professional experience or special achievements play a role in addition to high school graduation exam scores and course grades. These “other achievements” are evaluated by a selection committee (Section 7 of the selection regulations). The exact procedure is outlined in the respective selection regulations.

You can find more information in the admission regulations for the bachelor's program or the admission regulations for the master's program.

Note: For deadlines and dates during the lecture period, see: Dates and Deadlines

For Teacher Education

For teacher education programs (State Examination for High School Teachers):

All students in the teacher education program are strongly encouraged to submit an application for assistance with an additional major if they are applying for another subject with limited enrollment in addition to biology and/or chemistry! If you have any further questions, feel free to send us an email.

Enrollment

Once the admissions process is complete, the Admissions Committee forwards its decisions to the Student Affairs Office. The Student Affairs Office notifies applicants in writing. Those who have been admitted should also receive their enrollment documents and an invitation to the math prep course. You should then fill out the enrollment documents, send them back to the Student Affairs Office, and pay the semester tuition fee on time (!). Later, you’ll receive your student ID card, at which point you’ll officially be a student. Your studies now begin with the O-Phase. Your studies now begin with the O-Phase.
